The cheapest answering service plan we found costs $14 a month. If your business gets 100 calls a month, that same service costs you $99.
Sticker prices are built to win the comparison tab, not to match your bill. So we skipped the "starting at" numbers and priced 22 services at the same real-world volume.
Every price below comes from each provider's own pricing page, checked in late September and early October 2026. Zinng is our product and it's in the list, so weigh that, but the math is the same for everyone.
The quick answer
For a small business taking about 100 calls a month, the cheapest live answering service runs about $384. The cheapest AI answering services run $20 to $80 for the same calls.
Monthly cost at 100 calls (about 300 minutes)
Bars are to scale and assume 100 calls averaging 3 minutes. Live services that round up or bill ring time will run higher; the full table is below.

What's the cheapest live answering service?
Specialty Answering Service came out cheapest among human answering services, at about $384 for 300 minutes. It bills by the second, has no setup fee, and offers a 14-day trial with no card.
Answer California ($392) and MAP Communications ($403) are close behind. They share nearly identical price sheets, and both offer a pay-as-you-go plan under $50 a month if you only get a handful of calls.
From $44 a month plus $1.54 a minute. Billed per second, month-to-month.
From $47 pay-as-you-go at $1.37 a minute. Free trial, no card.
From $49 pay-as-you-go at $1.37 a minute. Rounds every call up to the next minute.
Here's the uncomfortable part. Even the cheapest human service charges $1.28 to $1.54 for every minute past your bundle, so a busy month can double the bill.
What's the cheapest AI answering service?
SkipCalls is the cheapest AI answering service we found, at $19.99 a month for unlimited minutes. The fine print says "fair use," it's a very small company, and it isn't HIPAA compliant.
Zinng and AutomateNexus tie at $49. AutomateNexus gives you more minutes (500 vs 300) on a self-serve setup, while Zinng includes done-for-you setup, call transfers and SMS booking links on that plan.
SkipCalls, then Zinng and AutomateNexus at $49. Best when most calls are short questions.
Upfirst at $69.95 for 100 calls. Best when calls run long, since a 10-minute call costs the same as a 1-minute one.
We compared all 36 active AI receptionists, features included, in our best AI receptionists roundup. The table above only covers the ones that land under $150 at 100 calls.
Is there a free answering service?
Yes, two AI services have real free plans. Phonely includes 100 free minutes a month (about 50 calls), and Smith.ai's AI Receptionist answers 25 calls a month free, then charges $3 per call.
Free plans work if you get a few calls a week. Past that, you'll hit the cap mid-month, and that's exactly when a missed call hurts.
No live, human answering service we checked has a free plan. The closest you'll get is a 14-day trial.
Why is my answering service bill higher than the plan price?
Most surprise bills come from the same handful of rules. They're all in the fine print, and none of them show up in a "starting at" price.
MAP and Ruby round every call up to the next full minute. A 61-second call bills as two minutes.
Abby Connect bills in 30-second blocks and counts ring time. You pay before anyone says hello.
Few providers say whether robocalls are billed. Ask before you sign, because spam calls can eat a cheap bundle fast.
Davinci charges $95 to start. Moneypenny asks for 30 days' notice to cancel.
Rosie has no overage, but its $49 plan moves you to the $149 plan once you pass 250 minutes.
On per-call plans, a 20-second wrong number costs the same as a real lead. Smith.ai is one of the few that excludes misdials and telemarketers.
What do business owners say about cheap answering services?
Spam is the worry that comes up again and again. One attorney who'd just gone solo put it plainly in r/LawFirm:
"I see a lot of them charging by the minute and I get a ton of spam calls, so I don't want to be wasting a ton of money on them answering spam."
Another owner in r/EntrepreneurRideAlong was blunter: "Watch out for per minute billing bc spam calls will eat your budget up super fast every single damn day." (source)
The billing model matters as much as the price. This attorney moved from a per-call service to a per-minute one and saved money, because their calls are short:
And some owners skip live services altogether. In the same thread, another firm described dropping two human services for an AI tool:
How do you find the cheapest plan for your call volume?
The cheapest answering service for a dentist with 400 calls isn't the cheapest for a roofer with 40. Five minutes with your phone bill will tell you which one is yours.

The honest catch: is a cheap answering service worth it?
A cheap answering service is worth it if it answers the call and does something useful with it. A $20 plan that takes a message nobody reads is more expensive than a $400 one that books the job.
Live services still win for complicated or emotional calls, like a legal intake or an upset patient. If most of your calls are "are you open," "how much," and "can you come Tuesday," you're paying human rates for questions software answers well.
That's the case for an AI front line with a human behind it. The AI answers every call 24/7, handles the routine ones, and transfers you the ones that need a person.
Zinng does exactly that for $49 a month, with 300 minutes, done-for-you setup and a 7-day free trial. Transferred calls and blocked spam calls don't count against your minutes, which takes care of two traps above.
If you want to compare it against hiring someone, our AI receptionist vs human cost breakdown runs those numbers. Or hear a demo built on your own website first.
So here's the real question. How many calls did your business miss last month, and what would one of them have been worth?

FAQ
What is the cheapest answering service?
SkipCalls is the cheapest AI answering service we found, at $19.99 a month for unlimited minutes under a fair-use policy. The cheapest live service was Specialty Answering Service, at about $384 for 100 calls a month.
How much does a cheap answering service cost?
For about 100 calls a month, cheap AI answering services cost $20 to $80. Cheap live answering services start around $384 for the same calls.
Is there a free answering service for small business?
Phonely's free plan includes 100 minutes a month, and Smith.ai's AI Receptionist answers 25 calls a month free. No live answering service we checked has a free plan.
Is per-minute or per-call pricing cheaper?
Per-minute pricing is cheaper when most calls are short questions, which is typical for small businesses. Per-call pricing wins when calls run long, because a 10-minute call costs the same as a 1-minute one.
Why is my answering service bill higher than the advertised price?
Usually overage minutes, rounding every call up to a full minute, billing ring time, or charging for spam calls. Setup fees and auto-upgrades to a bigger plan add to it too.
Is a cheap answering service worth it?
Yes, if it answers every call and does something useful, like booking the job or transferring urgent calls to you. A cheap service that only takes messages can cost you more in lost customers than it saves.
