It's a great fit for one person who wants a separate number on their cell. It gets harder as you add people, texting volume, or a phone menu.
Google Voice personal vs business
There are two ways to buy Google Voice, and the difference matters. One is for a single person on a Gmail account, and the other is an add-on for teams on Google Workspace.
One US user with a personal @gmail.com account. Free, Voice Starter, or Voice Standard. No Workspace needed.
For teams on paid Google Workspace. When employees leave, their numbers stay with the business.

The Workspace plans are on top of Google Workspace itself, which Google says "starts at $6 per user per month." So a Workspace Voice Starter user really costs at least $16 a month.
Is Google Voice free for business? The free tier works for one person on a personal account. Numbers that don't support texting aren't eligible, and if you cancel a paid plan you have to wait 30 days to buy again.
What each plan gets you
The feature that trips people up is the phone menu. Google positions Voice Standard as the tier for multi-level auto attendants, ring groups, and desk phones.

How to use Google Voice for business: setup in 5 steps
- Pick the right account. Solo? Use a Gmail account set aside for the business. Team? Add Voice to Google Workspace.
- Choose your number. Search by city or area code at voice.google.com and pick a local number.
- Link your cell. Add your mobile as a linked number so business calls ring your phone.
- Set hours and a greeting. Record a voicemail greeting and use Do Not Disturb or schedules for off-hours.
- Install the app. Use the Google Voice app to call and text from your business number, not your personal one.
Limits small businesses run into
Texting vs a phone menu. One owner with 650 clients on Google Voice reported that turning their number into a phone tree would mean losing texting on that number. That's their report, but it's worth checking before you set up a menu.
Caller ID confusion. Calls forwarded to your cell can show the business line instead of the customer's name.

Business texting rules. Business texting from US 10-digit numbers has registration rules (10DLC), and texts from consumer apps can get filtered. If texting customers is core to your business, pick a provider that registers you.
Nobody answers for you. Google Voice routes calls, but it doesn't pick them up. When you're on a job, the caller still hears voicemail.
