Number Porting Policy

Your phone number is one of the most valuable things your business owns. Here is exactly where we stand on moving it in, and moving it out.

The short version

  • We do not charge you to port a number into Zinng.
  • We will never charge you to port a number out of Zinng.
  • If you leave, you take your number with you. We will not hold it hostage, and we will not make you argue with anyone to get it released.

What porting actually means

Porting is the process of moving an existing phone number from one provider to another. Your customers keep calling the same number they always have. What changes is who carries the call behind the scenes.

If you have a number your business has used for years, on your website, on your truck, on every invoice you have ever sent, porting is how you bring it to Zinng without losing it or asking anyone to update their contacts.

Porting in is free

We do not charge a porting fee to bring your number to Zinng. There is no setup charge and no per number fee for the port itself. You pay for your Zinng plan, and that is it.

We also handle the paperwork with you. Porting requires specific details to match your existing carrier's records exactly, and a small mismatch is the most common reason a port gets rejected. We will tell you what we need and walk it through with you.

Porting out is free, permanently

If you decide Zinng is not for you, you can take your number and go. We will not charge you a fee to release it, and we will not create obstacles to slow you down.

We want to be direct about why we are putting this in writing. Some providers charge a fee to release your number, or make leaving deliberately painful, because a number you cannot easily move is a customer who cannot easily leave. We think that is a bad way to run a business. We would rather earn your stay every month.

This commitment is also written into our Terms of Service, so it is a term of your agreement with us and not just a promise on a help page.

Which numbers are yours

There is a distinction worth understanding, and we would rather explain it than have it surprise you later.

  • A number you ported in is yours. You brought it to us, and you can take it with you whenever you want.
  • A number we provisioned for you is licensed to you for use with the Service rather than sold to you. Even so, our no fee commitment still applies: if you want to port that number out to another provider, we will not charge you to do it. The one thing we cannot promise is what your new provider will accept, because that is their decision and not ours.

What we cannot control

We can promise you our own fees and our own conduct. We cannot promise the behavior of the wider phone network, so here is an honest account of what sits outside our hands.

  • Timelines. Local number ports commonly take a few business days. Toll free numbers usually take longer, often a few weeks, because they run through a separate process.
  • Approval by the losing carrier. Your current provider has to confirm the details on the request. If the business name, address, or account number does not match their records exactly, the port is rejected and has to be corrected and resubmitted.
  • Eligibility. A number generally has to be active to be ported. If you cancel service on a number before the port completes, it can be disconnected and released back into the pool, and at that point it may be gone for good.
  • Your new provider's rules. When porting away from us, the receiving provider sets its own requirements and may charge its own fees. We have no say in either.

Important: do not cancel your old service first

This is the single most costly mistake we see. Keep your existing phone service active until the port has fully completed. Cancelling early can disconnect the number, and a disconnected number cannot be ported. It can be permanently lost.

Once the port completes, you can safely cancel the old service.

How to start a port

Either direction, just contact us and we will get it moving.

  • Porting in? Tell us the number you want to bring over and who currently provides it. We will send you the form and tell you exactly which details have to match.
  • Porting out? Tell us where the number is going. Your new provider will start the request on their end, and we will release it. If they need anything from us, ask them to say so and we will provide it.
