Why you can't text this contact

Find out why SMS is blocked or a text failed in your inbox, including landlines, opt-outs, unsupported countries and plan limits.

Last updated Essential plan and above

You usually cannot text a contact because the number is a landline, the contact opted out, or the number is outside the US and Canada. If SMS is greyed out or a message shows a red warning, find your reason below.

Why does it say the number can’t receive texts?

Section titled “Why does it say the number can’t receive texts?”

You see: “This number can’t receive text messages. It appears to be a landline/voicemail/pager.” Texting is blocked for that number. Call them instead, or ask for a mobile number.

Why does it say delivery is not guaranteed?

Section titled “Why does it say delivery is not guaranteed?”

You see: “This number may not receive texts. We’ll try, but delivery isn’t guaranteed.” You can still send.

If someone replies STOP, we stop texting them. The message says the recipient has opted out of SMS and is not sent. There is no retry. Texting can resume only after they opt back in.

Can I text a number outside the US and Canada?

Section titled “Can I text a number outside the US and Canada?”

Why is a number I texted before now blocked?

Section titled “Why is a number I texted before now blocked?”

If a real send to a number confirmed it cannot receive texts, later messages are blocked with: “This number already failed to receive a text message and is blocked.”

Could my plan or registration be the reason?

Section titled “Could my plan or registration be the reason?”
  • No two-way texting on your plan. The message box is disabled until you upgrade.
  • Contacts you have not spoken with. On the Essential plan you can text people who called or texted you in the last 90 days. To text someone first, or after 90 days of silence, you need the Pro plan and A2P 10DLC registration.
  • Registration not finished. Texting is disabled until your A2P 10DLC registration is approved.
  • Toll-free number not verified. Texting from a toll-free number is disabled until its verification is submitted and approved, and while it is under review.
